A Grid assignment challenge
Sometimes, when I am scrolling through Instagram, looking for inspiration, I find it. There was a post by Dogearjournals who shared some things she was recently working on, including a spread in her grid journal.
If you don’t know what a grid journal is, it’s where you draw/trace squares onto a page, and then create a series of collages that are separate, but also belong to a set. Here’s what Pam shared:
Looking over these four collages, do you notice how there are the same elements in each collage, done in four different ways? Isn’t that so interesting?! How did she come up with four distinct collages? How can this be deconstructed, learned from, and recreated? I decided to share this with those in my membership to see if we could recreate the exercise.
The first step was to identify all the elements. For example, for the papers, there are the following:
dictionary page
map (including border/frame)
a parallelogram of solid colored paper
a parallelogram from an art scrap
a postage stamp in the same color family
There is also the same rubber stamp, sometimes used in its entirety, and other times just sections.
Lastly, there are marks:
five dots (though one collage has six), arranged in some pattern
seven dashes, all consecutive
Once the formula had been identified, they were tasked with coming up with four sets of elements, inspired by Pam’s example, and then creating a set of collages with them.
They did not disappoint!
So many people shared their creations and shared that it was a fun exercise. I’m so pleased! Here are several of them:
